The Five Sibyls: The Apostle’s Creed

After such a thundering presentation about the need to recognize women’s rights to the priesthood of Jesus Christ, Michelangelo might have been satisfied, but such was not the case.

A true artistic genius looks at all of the angles from which the arguments presented within the context of his art will be viewed and critiqued. Michelangelo desired to prove that women were “divine” and therefore empowered with the gift of prophecy, just as men.

To prove this correlation, Michelangelo needed to show that women, just like men, had been given special insight to the same truths as the great Hebrew prophets upon whom Christendom was built. The problem was how to continue to present such an argument.

The oracles of Greece and the sibyls of Rome were women considered to be chosen by the gods through whom divine advice would be spoken. They played a central part in Greek and Roman society and religion. The spiritual power of these women was great:

The female priestess Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi, was continually consulted as to the proper times when the armies of Greece should invade Rome and Persia.

The female Oracle at Siwa, in Egypt, was consulted by Alexander the Great about the true identity of his father, Phillip II of Macedon or the god Zeus.
